Auditions for The Man In the Newspaper Hat
Auditions are being held February 12th for an upcoming production of Hayley Heaton’s The Man in the Newspaper Hat
being produced by ManyTracks and directed by Katrin Hilbe. The rehearsals & production will take place in Seattle, WA.
The Play
The play is a fictionalized portrayal of what went into the creation of Elizabeth Bishop's poem
"Visits to St. Elizabeth’s". Bishop wrote this poem during visits she made to Ezra Pound in her
function as Consultant in the years 1949-1950. Ezra
Pound, the founder of Modernism in Poetry but infamous for his pro-fascist and
anti-Semitic rants was remanded to St. Elizabeth’s in 1946 after having been
considered unfit to stand trial for high treason.
Each scene is built upon
aspects of Bishop's poem and follows these two very different artists as they
come together, "poet to poet," trying to discuss what makes a good
poem and what does not. The effort
to connect as poets, however, is inevitably colored by both of their histories,
resentments and agendas. The tension rises, culminating in an outburst, a
defeat and a poem.
Rehearsals: The month of April, some table work in February.
Performances: Fridays and Saturdays of May, 2011, location TBD.
There will be a stipend paid.
Cast:
Ezra Pound - 64 years, about 6ft, brilliant poet, mind and infamous pro-fascist anti-Semite.
His opinions landed him in the mental asylum of St. Elizabeth’s in lieu of being tried for high treason.
Ego-centric, eccentric, moody, diva, over-the top, struggling with outer and inner demons.
Elizabeth Bishop - 38 years, about 5ft 2 inches, squat/compact build, equally brilliant poet and mind, very different in
temperament and demeanor. Precise and often cruel observer, watchful, sense of humor, diplomatic, admired Pound as a young poet and student at Vassar, when it
was not fashionable.
Audition:
Auditions for both roles will be held on February 12th at the
Market Theater, 1428 Post Alley, Seattle WA. A prepared monologue and cold
readings from the script will be part of the audition. To schedule an audition
